DAE targets 8,500 tonnes jute production

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target of 8,560 tonnes of jute production in the current season.

Farmers of the district are becoming interested in jute cultivation due to the implementation of various programmes for agricultural development by the government.

According to district DAE sources, the target of jute cultivation in five upazilas in Joypurhat district was set at 3,495 hectares of land. But against the target, 3,118 hectares of land cultivation has been achieved.

This includes 3,093 hectares of Tosha variety jute and 25 hectares of domestic variety. The production target of jute has been set at 8,560 tonnes.

The planting was delayed due to the heatwave that caused a draught-like situation. Jute cultivation requires extensive irrigation. Due to this, it was not been possible to achieve the target of jute cultivation, said DAE sources.

The farmers of the district are becoming more interested in jute cultivation due to the increasing price of jute, using jute cuttings as fuel and increasing the soil fertility in jute cultivation.

To make jute cultivation successful, the agriculture department undertakes hands-on training of farmers, supply of improved varieties of jute seeds and keeps the stock of necessary fertilisers at satisfactory levels.

Jamalpur DAE Deputy Director Agronomist Rahela Parveen said in the current 2022-23 Kharif-1 crop production season, jute has been cultivated on 3,118 hectares of land against the target of 3,495 hectares in the district.

“This time due to the late rainfall, jute cultivation has also been delayed, so it has not been possible to achieve the target. I expect that it will be possible to produce 8,560 tonnes of jute in the current season,” she added.
