Five killed in road accidents

At least five people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Cox’s Bazar, Satkhira and Kurigram on Friday.

In Cox’s Bazar three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck in Ramu upazila, police said.

The accident took place at around 8am at Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway beside Ukhiya Khunia palong area of the upazila. The driver of the auto rickshaw and two passengers died on the spot. The deceased could not be identified yet.

According to police and locals, the auto-rickshaw was on the way to Cox’s Bazar from Ukhia when it collided head-on with a Teknaf-bound truck at Khunia Palong area.

In Satkhira, a woman was killed in a road accident in Chourongi Mour area on the Satkhira-Khulna Highway in the town Friday morning, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Thana Abu Jihad Fakrul Alam Khan confirmed the matter.

The deceased was identified as Taslima Khatun, 52, from Gopinathpur village in Sadar upazila of the distrct.

Police said the accident occurred when a passenger bus crushed Taslima Khatun in the area around 9 am as she was crossing the highway, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared her dead.

In Kurigram, a primary school teacher named Abdul Rahim Raju, 48, was killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Trimohani area of Belgacha union of Sadar upazila around 11:30am on Friday.

According to the police and locals, the deceased Raju was going towards Rangpur from Kurigram on a motorcycle when another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction crashed into him head-on. Raju fell from the motorcycle when a sandladen tractor ran over him. He died on the spot.
