The 59th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed in the country on Tuesday in a befitting manner.

People across the country observed the day with various programmes including cake cutting ceremony, colourful rally and wreath placing.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) celebrated the day with various programmes. As part of the daylong celebration programmes, on behalf of Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, RCC Councilors and officials placed wreaths on the portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Russel at city bhaban premises at 10.30 am.

After paying rich tributes to them they held a brief discussion along with offering prayers for the salvation of the departed souls.

Afterwards, they opened the daylong programmes by releasing festoons, balloons and pigeons followed by a colourful rally that marched some city streets.

City’s road dividers and other important crossings were decorated with colourful flags, banners and festoons along with overhead banners with posters of Sheikh Russel on the occasion.

In Gaibandha, marking the day, the district administration and Bangladesh Shishu Academy here have jointly chalked out the elaborate programmes.

The programmes include placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, offering prayers and munajat, holding doa mahfil, serving improved diets to the inmates of orphanages, art and essay writing competitions to the students, and prize distribution to the winners.

The programmes also included screening the programmes undertaken by the government in Dhaka through a multimedia projector, tree plantation and serving improved diets to the inmates of Shishu paribars.

Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini inaugurated the rally with the participation of officials, politicians, students, teachers, professionals, sociocultural activists, civil society members and common people.

In Khulna, the day observance programmes included - cake cutting, discussions, milad and doa mahfils, cultural functions, rallies, painting competitions, tree plantation and distribution of foods among the destitute people.

Khulna District Administration, Awami League and their associate organisations, Khulna Shishu Academy, Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Mongla Port Authority, West Zone Power Company Ltd, have observed elaborate programmes including cake cutting, milad and doa mahfil, rally, discussion, cultural function, essay and art competition and tree plantation programme.

Marking the day, District and City Unit Muktijoddha Command, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, Khulna City Corporation, Khulna Metropolitan Police, Khulna Range DIG of Police, Khulna District Administration, Departments of different GO-NGO, educational institutions and other organizations pay homage to the portrait of Sheikh Russel, set up at the DC office ground in the city.

In Jamalpur, the district administration had chalked out elaborate programmes including placing a floral wreath at the portrait of Sheikh Russel, a discussion, an art competition, Milad Mahfil and a special prayer for the eternal peace of the departed soul, to mark the day.

In the morning, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jamalpur  Shrabosti Roy placed a wreath of the portrait of Sheikh Russel at her office compound. It was followed by a discussion in the conference room of the DC.

Besides, seeking blessings for the departed soul of Sheikh Russel, a special Munajat was also held in various mosques and temples of the district.

Netrakona district administration and different socio-cultural and political organisations chalked out day-long programs, including placing wreaths on the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, bringing out colourful rallies and holding meetings to celebrate the day.

State minister for social welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru inaugurated the day’s programmes by placing wreaths on the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Russel at the Mukto Mancha in the morning.
