Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a suspected smuggler with 14 gold bars worth over Tk 1.41 crore along the Keragachhi border with India in Satkhira district on Friday.

The detainee is Jahangir Hossain, 28, son of Ismail Hossain of the Keragachhi village under Kalaroa upazila of the district.

Lt Col Ashraful Islam, commandant of the BGB-33 (Satkhira), said a team of the border force conducted a drive in the Keragachhi border area around 12:30pm after being tipped off that a consignment of gold would be smuggled to India from Bangladesh by a battery-run autorickshaw.

As the vehicle arrived there, the BGB members challenged it and recovered the 14 gold bars weighing over 1.632 kilograms after searching it, he said, adding that Jahangir was detained in this connection and later handed over to Kalaroa police station.

The market price of the gold bars is estimated over Tk 1.41 crore and those were deposited to the exchequer, the BGB officer added.
