At least one died and several others were injured as a bus of Star Line Paribahan overturned on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Saturday morning.
The incident took place on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Kalu Shah Mazar gate area in Sitakunda, Chattogram around 9am.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
According to witnesses, the bus was engaged in a race to overtake another bus of Star Line company heading towards Feni from Chattogram City.
At one stage, the bus veered off the road, collided with an island and overturned.
Abdur Razzak, deputy assistant director (DAD) of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Chattogram said one unit from Agrabad Fire Station got engaged in the rescue operation.
One died on the spot, he added.
Baro Auliya Highway Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Khokon Chandra Ghosh, said, “The injured were taken to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Among the injured, the condition of some individuals was critical.”
Traffic was disrupted for some time after the accident. Police seized the bus involved in the accident.
