The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Friday (July 10) said that ACC achieved 100% success in money laundering cases by ensuring conviction of criminals in all eleven such cases filed in 2019.
He said, “We ensured conviction in all eleven cases of money laundering in 2019, and also achieved 100 percent success in 2018. Once there was a huge backlog in money laundering cases, yet we managed to ensure conviction in all cases.”
The ACC boss made remarks while he was in a virtual meeting on the implementation report on ACC’s strategic work plan-2019. Other leading ACC officials also participated in the meeting.
Mahmood also said, “To stop money laundering from the country ACC needs to file cases against launderers in quick time and recover laundered assets. To do this, there should be a sound understanding among BFIU (Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit), CID (Criminal Investigation Department), and NBR (National Board of Revenue), and this could be implemented based on the strategic work plan of ACC”.
“ACC suspended its regular drive against corruption because of coronavirus situation, however, drive against the corrupt in relief and health sector will be accelerated further” he added.
Before the start of the meeting, one-minute of silence was observed on the memory of two ACC officials and others who have died of coronavirus across the country. Two promising ACC officials died of coronavirus while 18 others officials are infected with the virus, he lamented.
ACC commissioner Dr Md. Mozammel Haque Khan said, “Focal point officials at ministries and divisions can play an important role in implementing national integrity strategic work plans, but unfortunately, not a single corruption was revealed by these officials. There should be accountability for them. We urge to appoint honest, clean, and steadfast officials as focal point officers.”
Another ACC commissioner, AFM Aminul Islam said, “We need to increase surveillance on national service providing organizations as we frequently receive allegations against few organizations not providing expected service to people.”
The virtual meeting was also addressed by ACC secretary Md Dilwar Bhakt and director general ANM Al Firoz.
