11 killed in road accidents

At least eleven people including three of a family have been killed in three separate road accidents in Kurigram, Tangail and Sirajganj. 

Two people who were injured in the accidents, which took place on Thursday, are under critical condition and being treated at hospitals situated in their respective districts.

In Kurigram, four people, including three members of a family, were killed and another injured in a head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound bus and an auto-rickshaw in the Nageshwari area of the district on Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as Jalil Sarker, a three-wheeler driver, son of late Samuddi Sheikh, Shahidul Islam, his daughter Sumaiya, and his mother Sufia Begum of West Raiganj area of the upazila.

Shahidul Islam’s wife Shahnaz Begum was also injured and admitted to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Agitated local people blocked the road after the accident.

On information, the Officer-in-Charge of Nageshwari police station, Nabiul Hasan and UNO Nur Ahmed Masum rushed to the spot and calmed the mob.

According to police and local sources, construction work is underway on the Kurigram-Bhurungamari highway.

The accident occurred when the night bus of Rizvi Paribahan hit the autorickshaw at 7: 30 pm, leaving two people dead on the spot.

The two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

The Officer-in-Charge of Nageswari police station Nabiul Hasan said the bus driver was detained and the vehicle compounded.

In Rajarhat upazila, a van puller was killed in a road accident in Amin Bazar area on Kurigram-Rangpur road of the district on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Siraj Miah, 60, resident of Hidhar village in Chhinai union of Rajarhat upazila.
The accident occurred when a Kurigram-bound truck coming from Rangpur hit Siraj Miah's van in the area around 9:00am as he was returning home, leaving him dead on the spot, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajarhat police station Raju Sarker.
Police could not able to detain the truck driver as he managed to flee the scene with his vehicle, the OC added.
In Tangail, three transport workers were killed in a road accident at Ruhuli village under Gobindasi union in Bhuapur upazila of the district Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Asadul, 20, son of late Abdur Rashid, Rakib, 14, son of Ilias and Maqbul, 22, son of Abdul Bashed. The dead were all transport workers.

The accident occurred in the area when they were going to Ruhuli High School from Matikata village on a motorcycle this noon, they lost control and hit a wall on the side of the road and they were seriously injured.

Later, the injured were taken to Bhunapur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

The accident happened due to the over the speed of the motorcycle, the OC added.

In Sirajganj, three people riding a motorcycle died Thursday on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Highway after getting crushed under the wheels of a truck at Mohishluti of Tarash upazila.

“Another person, who was among the four riders, got injured. The identities of the deceased and injured men could not be confirmed immediately,” said Md Lutfor Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatikumrul Highway police station.

“A motorcycle carrying four riders was heading towards Hatikumrul in the evening. As they reached the Mohishluti area, a Bonpara-bound truck ran over them, leaving three of them dead and another one injured,” said the OC.

“Locals rushed the injured man to Bongamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital. On reaching the spot, police recovered the bodies and are trying to find out their identities. A case has been filed at Tarash police station,” he said.
