Gas cylinder explosion inside trawler in Cox’s Bazar, 12 injured

After a gas cylinder exploded inside a trawler at ghat-6 of Nuniachara in Bazar town of Cox’s Bazar around 10am on Friday 12 fishers onboard suffered burn injuries.

Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident.

Among the injured, 10 received 70 per cent burn injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. They were identified as Ayub 31, Dil Mohammad 30, Rafiq 25, Monir 26, Shafiqul 26, Arman 20, Rahim 37, Rahimullah 30, Shahid 35 and Osman 19.

The other two admitted to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital are Ali Akber, 50, and Dulal Majhi, 47.

However, the police could not confirm what caused the cylinder explosion while it was anchored at the wharf.

Mostak Ahmed, organising secretary of Cox's Bazar District Fishing Boat Owners Association, said, “The owner of the trawler is Salim Bahaddar of West New Baharchhar. I have learned that a gas cylinder suddenly exploded on the trawler and those on board were injured. However, it is not yet possible to know the details of why and how it exploded.”

Zainal Abedin Hazari, president of Cox's Bazar Fish Landing Centre Traders Oikya Sambay Samity, said that after hearing the sound of the explosion, the people around came forward and rescued everyone and took them to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital Dr Ashikur Rahman said that 12 people who were burnt in the fire were brought to the hospital in the morning.

After their initial treatment, 10 people with 70 per cent burns were sent to CMCH for further treatment as their conditions were critical.
