Bangladesh reported 139 new coronavirus-related deaths over the last 24 hours till 8:00am Sunday.
Health authorities also reported 4,804 new infections from the deadly virus during the same period.
With these, the overall caseload now stands at 14,61,998 and total fatalities at 25,282, according to the daily press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In the last 24 hours, the positivity rate went down to 15.16 per cent from Saturday’s 16.71 per cent.
Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 31,689 samples at 732 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 86,49,517 samples.
Meanwhile, 8,453 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24-hours, raising the overall recovery to 13,63,874.
Among the fresh fatalities, 72 were males and 67 were females.
Dhaka division was the worst-hit region logging 38 deaths followed by 31 in Chattogram, 17 in Khulna, 15 in Rajshahi, 12 in Sylhet, 10 in Mymensingh and eight each in Rangpur and Barishal.
Bangladesh to get over 6.34 lakh AstraZeneca doses from Japan Aug 28
Japanese Ambassador to Dhaka Naoki Ito on Sunday said they planned to deliver another 6,34,920 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines on August 28 and fulfil their commitment of over 3 million doses to Bangladesh.
On Saturday, Bangladesh received the fourth batch of vaccine – 7,81,440 doses of AstraZeneca – which was part of 3 million doses that the Japanese government will provide to Bangladesh through the COVAX Facility.
Bangladesh received the first consignment of 2,45,200 doses, the second consignment of 7,81,320 doses and the third consignment of 6,16,780 doses which respectively arrived on July 24, July 31, and August 3, totalling 24,24,700 doses so far.
"Action if DGHS staff found involved in vaccine sale scandal"
DGHS Director General ABM Khurshid Alam on Sunday said action would be taken if anyone from the directorate is found involved in the sale of Covid vaccine.
Dubbing the issue of vaccine theft "very sensitive", he said an investigation was underway over the allegations of selling vaccines in one or two places in the country.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.
