Around 1,400 diarrhoea patients are being admitted to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) daily and at least 25 people died on the way to the hospital in the past week.

Deceased coming from remote areas- Shanir Akhra, Jatrabari succumbed to severe dehydration on the way to icddr,b due to the distance and traffic and died on the way.

However, no one had died after being admitted to the hospital.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS)'s disease control branch, around 5,00,000 people in the country have been treated for diarrhoea since January. Two of them died while undergoing the treatment.

DGHS Director Professor Nazmul Islam advised the patients not to come to Mohakhali Cholera Hospital from far away.

“Diarrhoea treatment is being provided in all the hospitals at the local level. Even diarrhoea wards have been opened at Mugda Medical College and Hospital and Sir Salimullah Medical College for patients in south and east of the city,” the director added.

“Because of the distance and delay for the traffic jams, many patients get dehydrated as they do not get saline on time,” he also said.
