Bangladesh Railway (BR) suspended three officials on Tuesday in relation to the train accident in Bhairab of Kishoreganj.

These three officials are the Locomaster, Assistant Locomaster and Guard of the freight train.

BR Dhaka Divisional Manager Md Shafiqul Islam told the media that the suspended three officials are Locomaster Jahangir Alam, Assistant Locomaster Atiqur Rahman and Guard of the container train Alamgir Hossain, reports BSS.

He said they had taken the steps following a preliminary investigation as the officials failed to discharge their duty which resulted in an accident that took 17 lives.

16 bodies handed over to families

Meanwhile, 16 of the 17 people who died in the train crash on Monday were identified and their bodies were handed over to families on Tuesday.

A 33-year-old man remained unidentified and his body was kept at the morgue of Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College and Hospital.

Kishoreganj Civil Surgeon's office and the district police disclosed the names of the deceased this afternoon, reports UNB.

Among the identified victims are four members of a family from Mymensingh. Sujan Mia, 34, his wife Fatema Begum, 25, and their two sons, Sajib, 11, and Ismail, 8, from Mymensingh’s Banati Gangailpara village in Nandail Upazila.

A total of 10 victims were residents of Kishoreganj district.

They are Golap, 23, of the Boalia area of Katiadi upazila, Simon Mia, 22, of Chanpur village in Mithamoin upazila, Russell Mia, 26, of Bhara Golahati village, Hosna Khatun, 23, of Sakua village in Karimganj upazila, Sabuj Chandra Sheel, 50, of Ranibazar area of Bhairab upazila, Afzal Hossain, 24, of Radhanagar village, Rabbi, 30, of Srinagar village, Nazrul, 40, of  Amlapara area, Humayun Kabir, 57, of Lakshimpur Ghatipara village in Kuliarchar upazila and Asir Uddin, 34, from Duaigaon village in Bajitpur upazila.

The remaining two victims were Nizam Uddin, 65, of Baraichara village in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila, and AKM Jalal Uddin Ahmed, 37, of Dhaka’s Naddapara area of Dakkhin Khan.

Civil Surgeon Dr Saiful Islam said that he received the list of the deceased from Bhairab Upazila Health Complex.

The rescue operation was declared completed at 3:30am yesterday after three bogies that overturned in the accident were removed from the line.

MoR forms 7-member probe committee

The Ministry of Railways (MoR) on Tuesday formed a seven-member investigation committee to probe the Bhairab rail accident.

The investigation committee has been ordered to submit its report in seven working days, according to a statement signed by MoR Deputy Secretary Towfiq Imam.

Joint Secretary of Railways Ministry Hasan Mahmud will lead the committee as convener while Deputy Secretary Towfiq Imam will be its member secretary, the statement said.

The committee, comprising representatives of the MoR and Bangladesh Railway, will investigate the cause of the accident.

Other members of the committee are BR Joint Director Generals MA Salah Uddin and Tabassum Binte Islam, MoR Deputy Secretary Ministry Mohammad Hanif, BR Additional Tecom Officer and Divisional Medical Officer.

Fire Service forms 5-member committee

Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence on Tuesday formed another five-member probe committee to investigate the deadly train accident.

The investigation committee has been ordered to submit its report in five working days, said Mohammad Shahjahan Sikder, acting officer of the media cell of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Director (operations and maintenance) of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Lieutenant Colonel Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury will lead the committee while Md Masud Sardar, assistant director of Mymensingh Fire Service (member secretary) will be its member secretary, he added.

The other members of the committee are-- Deputy Assistant Director of Narsingdi Fire Service Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Assistant Director of Kishoreganj Fire Service Md Enamul Haque, and Station Officer of Bhairab Bazar Fire Service Station Md Azizul Haque.

Earlier on Monday night, three separate committees were formed to investigate the train accident.

At least 17 people were killed and several others were injured on Monday when a cargo train rammed into two bogies of a passenger train "Egarosindhur Express" at Bhairab Rail Station in Kishoreganj.

The accident occurred at 3:50pm when the cargo train hit the Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Godhuli Express, coming from Kishoreganj. The passenger train was standing on the outer tracks on its way to Dhaka from the port city of Chottogram.

Two rear bogies of the passenger train were smashed with many travellers stuck inside.
