At least two thousand people have been waterlogged in Bhola as water levels of river and sea estuaries started to rise from Tuesday morning due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’.
Several low-lying areas, including Char Kukrimukri, Dhalchar and Char Patila, are now submerged under the tidal waters at Bhola Char Fasson.
Panic has spread among people due to the rising water level. However, no major damage has been reported so far.
Dhalchar Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Salam Hawladar said, "700 to 800 families in our union have been flooded as the whole union is now submerged. The situation is similar in the neighbouring unions as well. About 2,000 families remain stranded in the flooded areas."
Char Kukrimukri UP chairman Abul Hashem Mahajan said that roads, jetties, fish enclosures and other important installations there were under water.
Forty islanders in the district have been identified as endangered and preparations have been made to evacuate three lakh people from the area, he added.
