Two independent candidates of Gafargaon constituency in Mymensingh have boycotted the election, alleging vote rigging and voting irregularities.

The candidates are Dr Abul Hossain Dipu with truck symbol and Advocate Kaiser Ahmed with eagle symbol.

Advocate Kaiser Ahmed made the announcement about the election boycott at a press conference held at his Dhamail residence in Gafargaon upazila at 11am on Sunday.

Both the candidates said they boycotted the voting as the polling agents of most of the polling centres in 15 unions and municipal areas of the upazila were forced out of the polling centres.

The allegations of vote rigging and voting irregularities were brought against the presiding officer, assistant presiding officer and polling agent at Madinatul Ulum Qawmi Madrasa and Orphanage centre of Gafargaon Municipality in Mymensingh-10 constituency.

Presiding officer Ilias Uddin, assistant presiding officer Nurul Haque and polling agent Abul Kalam were detained following the allegations, said Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Didare Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury.

Denying various allegations, Awami League candidate Fahmi Golandaj Babel said, “People rejected them. Realising defeat, the independent candidates boycotted the vote to question the election.”

A total of 72 candidates are contesting for 11 seats in the district.
