Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two men with 27 gold bars worth around Tk 2.56 crore in Jhenaidah along the border with India on Thursday.

The arrestees were Md Ruhul Amin, 32, son of Md Monowar Hossain, and Md Saiful Islam, 26, son of Md Abdus Salam. Both are residents of Kadirkol village in Kaliganj upazila of the district.

According to a media release signed by Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana, captain at Maheshpur BGB Battalion 58, the BGB acted on a tip-off that a consignment of gold would be smuggled to India from Bangladesh through the Maheshpur border.

A BGB team detained the two when they were heading towards the border by a motorcycle, it said, adding that the gold bars weighing around 3.139kg were recovered from their possession later.
