Sporadic violence reported in parts of country, 2 dead

Isolated incidents of violence have been reported in parts of the country while voting took place in the 12th national election on Sunday, leaving two dead and several injured.

One stabbed dead in Munshiganj

A supporter of the Awami League candidate was stabbed to death allegedly by supporters of the independent candidate at Tengor in Mirkadim of Munshiganj’s sadar upazila on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Zillur, 42, a supporter of AL-backed candidate Mrinal Kanti Das of Munshiganj-3 constituency, reports UNB.

Quoting witnesses, Superintendent of Police Aslam Khan said supporters of independent candidate Foysal Biplab attacked Zillur and stabbed him with a sharp weapon at around 9:45am, leaving him dead.

Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the attack.

AL supporter killed in Cumilla

A supporter of Awami League-candidate for Cumilla-4 Razee Mohammad Fakhrul was found dead near a polling centre at Kasharikhola in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Noab Ali, 60, son of Abdi Mia of Kasharikhola village, reports UNB.

Jewel Rana, son of Noab Ali, said Noab was talking to his uncle Selim after casting his vote at Kasharikhola Government Primary School polling stations in the morning.

At one stage, a supporter of independent candidate Abul Kalam Azad appeared there and an altercation ensued between them over the polls.

Later, the supporter of the independent candidate rolled a scarf around Noab’s neck and pushed him to the ground at around 10am, leaving him injured.

He was taken to Debidwar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Nayan Mia, officer-in-charge of Debidwar Police Station, said there were no injury marks on the body of Noab and it is not confirmed if it is election-related killing.

2 shot in Chattogram

Two people were shot in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and an independent candidate in front of Pahartali Degree College in Chattogram on Sunday.

The injured were identified as Shanto Barua, 24 and Md Jamal, 35. However, it could not be confirmed who the two victims supported, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

According to witnesses, a chase and counter-chase occurred between the supporters of AL-nominated candidate Mohiuddin Bacchu and independent candidate Manjur Alam Manju in front of the Pahartali Degree College polling station at around 11am.

At one point in the clash, a gun-wielding youth shot some fire. He was later identified as Shamim Azad, an activist of the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League, according to police.

Members of the police and BGB brought the situation under control afterwards.

Confirming the incident, Sheikh Neyamat Ullah, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station, said the two injured were taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). He added that proper action would be taken after an investigation.

CMCH Hospital Police Box Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Ashek said that the two injured with bullet wounds admitted to the CMCH casualty ward are currently undergoing treatment.

Crude bomb blasts injure 4 in Dhaka

Four people, including a child, were injured as two crude bombs exploded in front of a polling station at Hazaribagh Battala in the capital on Sunday.

The injured were identified as Amir Hossain, 60, Badal Ahmed, 50, his son Tanvir Ahmed, 8, and Maksuda Begum, 50, reports UNB.

Witnesses said miscreants exploded two crude bombs in front of Battala Jamia Anwarul Uloom Madrasa at around 11:30am, leaving several injured.

The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the police outpost at the hospital. However, the victims sustained minor injuries and now they are out of danger, he said.
