A 20-kilometre tailback on Dhaka-Tangail Highway is causing immense suffering to apparel workers as they started returning to their workplaces after a declaration of reopening all export-oriented industries of the country from Sunday.

Earlier, all public transports on Saturday were announced to resume operation till Sunday noon for the arrival of workers during the ongoing countrywide lockdown.

Since Saturday's announcement, workers began to rush to Dhaka in buses as well as goods-laden trucks ignoring health rules.

A garment worker on his way to Dhaka said he had to pay several times more than the regular transport fare in a truck. He was returning to his workplace for fear of losing his job.

Officer-in-Charge of Hatikumrul Highway police station Shahjahan Ali said no vehicles were being obstructed after the reopening of factories. That is why there is extra traffic pressure on the highway.

However, the police official said they were working to keep the traffic flow normal.
