As many as 35 students of Dhaka University have got stranded on their way to the capital due to the worsening flood situation in Sunamganj.

The students, including 21 of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, are now in a launch which got stuck on a shoal of the Surma River near Dowarabazar, Sunamganj.

The launch, carrying 100 passengers including the students, was heading towards Sylhet.

Earlier on June 14, the students travelled to Sunamganj to visit Tanguar Haor and were set to return on June 16 night.

But the rise of water in the district left them stranded as bus services from Sunamganj to Dhaka were suspended.

On Thursday night, they took refuge at Panshee Restaurant in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain rescued and took them to the Sunamganj Police Lines on Friday.

The students spent the night there, and on Saturday noon, they left for Sylhet via a launch and were supposed to receive help from the Bangladesh Army there to return to Dhaka.

But their launch got stuck on the shoal near the Dowarabazar U-loop, deepening their sufferings.

Talking to The Business Post, a student asked for help, saying, “Please pray for us so that we can be saved from this danger soon.”

Another student said it was raining heavily there and all the passengers were praying to the Almighty to be rescued from the ordeal.

"We have talked to the army, but they said they can't help us before morning. Please send help."
