22 detained over attack on Hindu houses in Sunamganj

Police detained 22 people in an overnight drive in connection with carrying out an attack on Hindu houses by Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh supporters in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj.

Confirming the matter, Shalla police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Haque said the detainees are being interrogated.

Efforts are on to nab others as well, he added.

Hefajat-e-Islam followers on Wednesday vandalised several Hindu houses in Sunamganj as a Hindu youth had allegedly criticised the party's Joint Secretary General Maulana Mamunul Haque on social media.

Young Hindu man Jhumon from Noagaon village made a Facebook post on Tuesday night. As the post went viral, police detained him with the help of locals on the same night.

Two separate cases were filed over the incident with Shalla police station.

A total of 1,500 people were made accused in one of the cases. Of them, 50 were named.
