In a bid to uphold law and order amidst complete nationwide shutdown announced by the quota reform protesters, 229 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across the country, including in Dhaka.

BGB Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam made the disclosure on Thursday morning.

Asif Mahmud, one of the coordinators of Boisommo Borodhi Chhatra Andolon, announced the “Complete Shutdown” programme on social media Facebook on Wednesday evening.

He had stated, “We, the students, are announcing a complete shutdown across the country on Thursday seeking to realise our one-point demand. During the programme, only hospitals and emergency services will continue to operate.

“No vehicles will ply on the road except for ambulances.”

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Owners Association Secretary General Enayet Ullah has announced that vehicles will be operated even in complete shutdown, adding that if the situation is well during the programme, traffic will remain normal.

“If there is a problem somewhere, then the movement of vehicles would be shut.”

Last Tuesday, 6 people lost their lives in clashes across the country over the quota reform movement.

In addition to two in the capital city of Dhaka, three were killed in Chittagong and one in Rangpur. Protesting the violence and killings, the students observed absentee funeral prayers [gayebana janaza] and symbolic coffin procession programmes on Wednesday.
