246 more Covid deaths, 15,989 fresh cases in Bangladesh

Bangladesh on Monday reported 246 new Covid related deaths in a 24-hour period. 

Health authorities also reported 15,989 fresh coronavirus cases during the same period until 8:00am Monday.

With the latest figures, the total fatalities in the country now stand at 21,162 and the total cases at 12,80,317, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The daily infection rate dropped slightly to 29.91 per cent from Sunday’s 29.97 per cent.

In a 24-hour period, 15,482 patients recovered from the deadly infection with an overall recovery rate of 86.60 per cent.

During this period, health authorities tested 53,462 samples in 697 laboratories across the country.

The overall infection rate is gradually increasing and currently stands at 16.32 per cent.

Dhaka division saw the highest 76 deaths in the last 24 hours, followed by 64 in Chattogram, 30 in Khulna, 22 in Rajshahi, 16 in Barishal, 14 each in Rangpur and Sylhet and 10 in Mymensingh.

Vaccination update
Bangladesh is running a mass vaccination campaign.

Until Sunday morning, 24,73,631 people received the first dose and 49,558 received the second dose of China’s Sinopharm vaccine.

Meanwhile, 50,255 people have received the first jab of the Pfizer vaccine, with 2,250 receiving the second dose.

A total of 7,64,225 people received the first shot of the Moderna vaccine, with 76,544 administered in the past 24 hours.

Of the AstraZeneca vaccine doses, 58,20,033 received the first shot and 42,99,859 got the second shot so far.

Bangladesh resumed administering the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine in Dhaka division from Monday and the rest of the country from August 7, said the health department.

So far, the country has received 2,50,26,320 doses from four vaccine makers of various countries. Of these, 1,13,26,320 were Oxford-AstraZeneca, 55 lakh Moderna, 81 lakh Sinopharm and 1 lakh Pfizer vaccines.

Bangladesh to co-produce Covid jabs with China
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Monday said Bangladesh would jointly produce the Covid-19 vaccines with China.

He confirmed the matter while briefing reporters at the state guest house Padma in Dhaka after meeting Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming.

A drafted agreement in this regard was sent to the health ministry, the minister said.

Momen said the government of Bangladesh, Sinopharm and local company Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd would sign the agreement. Read more

IEDCR study: Covid vaccination lowers hospitalisation, mortality chances
Vaccinated people face lower risks of respiratory problems, hospitalisation and fatality, according to a recent study of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research.

According to the study 11 per cent of unvaccinated Covid patients suffered from breathing difficulties whereas the rate was 4 per cent among the vaccinated ones.

Besides, the hospital admission rate among those who received double doses of Covid shots was only 7 per cent while it was 23 per cent for the unvaccinated. Read More

Antibodies found in 98pc vaccinated Bangladeshis
A research unveiled on Monday found that 98 per cent of the vaccinated people in Bangladesh have grown antibodies.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital conducted the study, titled “Haematological Parameters and Antibody Tire after Vaccination Against SARS-CoV-2”, on 209 people who had been vaccinated between April and July.

The study also showed that the people with a history of Covid-19 infection grew more antibodies. Read more

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8, 2020, and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.
