Twenty-five lakh doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine under COVAX facility will arrive in Dhaka on Friday and Saturday, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Wednesday.

“Around 12 lakh vaccine doses will reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11:20pm on Friday and the rest on Saturday,” said the Minister.

The Minister will be present at the airport on Friday, according to a Health Ministry press release.

On June 26, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller tweeted saying that Bangladesh will soon receive a gift of 2.5 million doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine from the American people via GAVI.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on June 25 condemned a global failure noting that the rich countries are opening up societies and vaccinating young people who are not at great risk from Covid-19, while the poorest countries cruelly lack doses.

Amid a serious spike of coronavirus cases, the government resumed the countrywide mass vaccination campaign on June 19 by administering Sinopharm jabs.

Meanwhile, health authorities in Bangladesh recorded 8,822 more Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh in 24 hours until Wednesday morning, the highest figure since the pandemic hit the country.

During the period, the country lost 115 more lives to Covid, raising the death toll to 14,503, said a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
