Dhaka customs house on Sunday seized 28.3 kg of gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in two separate drives.

In the first raid, 25 kg of gold – which was left unattended – was recovered from under the seats of a plane, and 3.33 kg of gold was seized in another raid from three passengers.

Legal action has been taken against the trio, said a press release by Customs Intelligence & Investigation Directorate (CIID) on Monday.

The release mentioned that based on the information received from the National Security Intelligence (NSI), a Dhaka custom house team, along with NSI officers, conducted a raid on a flight and found 55 pieces of gold wrapped in blue scotch tape under the seats of the aircraft.

There was no passenger found to be involved with the seized gold.

On a tip-off, the preventive team officers of the customs house took up positions at the boarding bridge of a flight that arrived from Dubai and conducted the second raid.

The presence of metal objects was found in the bodies of three passengers of the flight. The passengers are - Mashiur Rahman Rubel of Bagerhat, Jahangir Alam of Munshiganj and Akbar Hossain of Narayanganj, the release read.

The team x-rayed these passengers to confirm that they had oval-shaped metallic masses in their rectums. Later, 3.33 kg of gold paste worth Tk3.40 crore was recovered from passengers in the presence of various agencies present at the airport.

A criminal case was filed against the passengers and handed over to the airport police station.
