The government has imposed a three-day nationwide motorcycle ban from January 5 midnight as additional security measures during the national elections

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also imposed a complete ban on licence holders from carrying and displaying firearms till January 9.

The motorcycle ban will be in effect from midnight on January 5 to 12am on January 8, according to a circular released by the ministry's Public Security Division on Thursday.

As per the circular, during the national elections, all vehicle operations, including taxicabs, microbuses, pickups, trucks, launches, and engine-driven boats (excluding those operating on specific routes), will be prohibited in the election areas from midnight on January 6 to midnight on January 7.

The ministry stated that the aforementioned directive does not apply to candidates, law enforcement agencies, election agents, authorised observers, or administration. The ban is also not applicable on national highways.

Meanwhile, another circular was also issued on Thursday, banning carrying and displaying firearms till January 9 to allow peaceful balloting. The gazette was signed by Israt Jahan, deputy secretary of the home ministry.

It said the decision was taken to conduct the upcoming national elections in a free, fair, and peaceful manner and action would be taken against the violators in line with The Arms Act 1878.
