The Forest Department has imposed a three-month ban on tourism and fishing in the Sundarbans from June 1, to ensure the safe breeding and preservation of fish.

Mohammad Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East zone, confirmed the matter on Saturday.

“No permit will be issued to the fishermen for the next three months until August 31. Even then, if anyone defies the ban, strict action will be taken against him under the Forest Act,” he said.

Besides, officials and employees of the Forest Department will continue conducting drives to enforce the ban, Belayet said.

During the restriction period, the movement of visitors will also remain prohibited, he said, adding that the breeding activities of fishes will be disrupted if tourist boats ply in the rivers and canals in the mangrove forest.

Since 2019, the Forest Department has been imposing the ban with a view to protecting the huge fishery resources of the Sundarbans.

According to the department, June-August is the breeding season for most of the species of fish here.
