A woman, her son and another person were shot dead in broad daylight allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police in Customs intersection area of Kushtia town on Sunday.
Police detained ASI Shoumen Roy of Phultola police station in Khulna, shortly after the shooting incident around 11:15am.
The victims were identified as Shakil, 35, who worked as a bKash agent, Asma, 30, and Robin, 6, all residents of Naturia village in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia. They lived in Kushtia town.
Locals said they heard several gunshots and found the three lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.
Robin and Asma died on the spot, while Shakil was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Locals caught Shoumen and handed him over to police.
During primary interrogation, ASI Shoumen claimed Asma to be his wife and Robin was her son from a previous marriage, said Kushtia model police station officer-in-charge Sabbirul Islam, reports Daily Amader Shomoy.
“We are looking into the matter,” the OC added.
Khulna Superintendent of Police Mahbub Hasan said Shoumen left his workstation without informing his superiors.
The police official was staying with his first wife Lucky Roy and their two children at Tajpur near Phultola police station, he said.
“We are looking into the matter whether the firearm used in the killing was his service pistol or not,” the SP added.
