3rd budget session of 11th parliament prorogued

The 23rd budget session of 11th parliament was prorogued on Thursday after rolling out a smart national budget of Tk 7,61,785 crore for the 2023-24 fiscal year with a focus on tackling inflation, job creation, the fourth industrial revolution and "Smart Bangladesh."

This is the country's 52nd budget and the 24th ones of the Awami League government in five terms. This budget for FY24 is the 5th consecutive budget of incumbent finance minister.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on June 1 placed the budget titled "Towards Smart Bangladesh Sustaining the Development Achievements in a Decade and a Half" with a 7.5 per cent GDP growth and 6 percent inflation projection.

However, this will be the largest-ever budget for Bangladesh, a long way from the first budget of Tk 786 crore placed by Tajuddin Ahmad for FY1972-73.

Initially the 23rd session of the 11th parliament that began on May 31, continued till 26 June. After a short vacation for Eid-ul-Azha, the budget session then resumed on July 2. 

Before reading out the prorogation order of the president, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presented a documentary prepared based on speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed the destitute people in Dhaka on January 16, 1972.

The speech of Bangabandhu was collected from the Bangladesh Betar and the duration of the address was 9 minutes 10 seconds.

Jatiya Sangsad Leader Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered her valedictory speech at the closing of the 23rd session of the 11th parliament. Leader of the Opposition Begum Raushan Ershad also spoke.

A total of 187 treasury and opposition lawmakers participated in the budget discussion during the session.

The discussion was continued for 32 hours and three minutes.

A total of fourteen bills were passed along with forty-seven audit reports also were placed during the session.

A total 33 notices were received under section 71.

A total of 97 questions---where 56 were answered by the prime minister's question and answer sessions and 1,333 by the ministers out of 1,879 received questions during the 22 days long session.

Before reading out the prorogation order, the Speaker thanked all MPs of treasury and opposition benches.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also thanked officials of the parliament, journalists, law enforcers and fire service and civil defense personnel for rendering their services during the parliament session.
