The Enforcement and Inspection Directorate – operating under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), and RAB-4 have conducted a raid at Shah Ali Plaza Market and Elephant Road in the city’s Mirpur area.

The authorities conducted the drive to crack down against the illicit trade of smart TV boxes and set-top boxes, reads a press release issued Wednesday.

Three people were taken into custody during the operation from three shops in Shah Ali Plaza Market for selling 440 illegal or unauthorised set-top boxes and smart TV devices worth approximately Tk 15 lakh.

Additionally, 537 unauthorised set-top boxes and smart TV boxes were seized – with approximate market value of Tk 16 lakh – from a shop called All IT Collection on Elephant Road, and one person was arrested.

Filing of a case is underway against the detainees as per the provisions of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act, 2001.

The BTRC is conducting regular operations to stop the sale of illegal or unauthorised set-top boxes and smart TV boxes. The commission has specially requested all stakeholders to refrain from buying and selling any illegal and unauthorised set-top boxes or smart TV boxes.

Strict action will be taken against violators of the law, the release adds.
