Four alleged yaba peddlers were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Anwar, Md Ismail, Nasir and Anwar Hossain.
Teknaf Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das confirmed the matter to the media.
A police team went to the spot on a tip-off that a gunfight erupted among the peddlers over possession of smuggled yaba pills in the upazila's Huwaikang-Kharangkhali bordering area. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the yaba peddlers opened fire at them, triggering a skirmish, said the OC.
As the gunfight ended, four of the peddlers were found with bullet injuries and rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where physicians pronounced them dead.
50,000 yaba pills, two LGs and bullets were recovered from the spot, said the OC.
