Road crashes claimed 468 lives across the country in May this year, according to a report by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.

Forty-three people were killed in 50 railway accidents, while 16 were killed and eight was injured in 18 waterway accidents, read the report published on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passengers’ welfare organisation, put together the report after analysing accident reports published in the country’s national and regional dailies and online media during May.

A total of 527 people were killed and 779 others injured in 664 accidents on roads, waterways and railways across the country. Meanwhile, 181 people died and 114 others were injured in some 185 motorbike accidents.

Among those killed in road accidents in May, 182 people were drivers, 91 pedestrians, 55 transport workers, 75 students, 13 teachers, 12 members of law enforcement agencies, 78 women, 63 children, four journalists, two freedom fighter, five doctors, and eight activists of different political parties.

The association blamed reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and movement of unfit vehicles, unskilled drivers and helpers, plying of slow-moving three-wheelers and human haulers on highways, using headphones or mobile phones, using drugs, illegal occupation of footpaths, poor traffic management, and violation of traffic rules for the accidents and deaths.
