Police on Saturday said that a group of five gunmen were involved in the assassination of Mohibullah, a top Rohingya leader in Ukhiya and head of Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH).

A total of 19 people were involved in the murder and this was a pre-planned murder completed in just two minutes, 14th Armed Police Battalion Commander SP Naimul Haque said at a press briefing in Cox's Bazar.

The briefing was held following the arrest of Azizul Haque, a suspect of Mohibullah's murder case, earlier in the morning.

Talking to the media, SP Naimul said that along with Azizul Haque, Mohammad Rashid Prakash Murshid Amin of D-8 block of Kutupalong Camp-1 and Mohammad Anas of Block B of the same camp and Nur Mohammad were also arrested in the case.

Speaking about Azizul's confession during interrogation, he said the miscreants met for a killing mission in Morgaz Hills two days before Mohibullah's murder.

“From there, a total of 19 people along with 5 armed persons were instructed to complete the mission,” he added.

He also said that the miscreant planned to kill Mohibullah as he was becoming a popular leader among Rohingyas day by day.

According to their plan, on September 29, the arrested Murshid called Mohibullah saying that he wanted to talk about the repatriation issue, Naimul added.

He added that Mohibullah was shot four times and the killers fled behind Mohibullah's house after the mission. Later, everyone became alert. Blame is placed on different people.

The murder of Mohibullah is followed by another attack at a madrasa in a Rohingya camp that left six people dead in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Friday.

More than a million Rohingya live in Bangladesh after fleeing Myanmar, the vast majority in 2017 after a military crackdown that included mass killings and gang rapes and which the United Nations said was carried out with genocidal intent.

Myanmar denies genocide, saying it was conducting a legitimate campaign against insurgents who attacked police posts.
