At least five people were killed and 25 others injured as workers of clashed with police at a coal power plant in Chattogram's Banshkhali area at noon on Saturday.
The incident took place when workers started a demonstration demanding a pay hike.
The victims were identified as Ahmed Reza, Rony Hossain, Shuvho, Mohammad Rahat and Mohammad Raihan.
Kaniz Fatema, a duty doctor at Banhskhali Upazila Health Complex told The Business Post that they received four bodies.
The injured were referred to the CMCH, she said.
Assistant sub-inspector of police Alauddin Talukder said an injured person was declared dead at the CMCH.
The power plant is a joint venture of Bangladesh's S Alam Group and the Chinese firms SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation and HTG Development Group.
S Alam Group has 70 per cent stake in the 1,224-megawatt power plant while SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation and HTG Development Group - have 20 per cent and 10 per cent stakes respectively.
The power plant faced public opposition since the beginning of the project in 2013 over concerns that it could lead to thousands getting displaced of people.
At least four people were killed and 30 others injured in April 2016 in clashes between the police and local residents opposing the construction of the power plant.
Amid the protest, the power plant failed to draw the expected pace in construction.
S Alam Group was fined Tk 200 crore by Bangladesh Power Development Board for their failure to supply the electricity in the stipulated time, November 16, 2019.
After three years of extension, this power plant is supposed to supply electricity to the national grid by 2022.
BPDB is supposed to purchase electricity from this power plant at a levelized tariff rate of US$ 8.259 cents for 25 years.
