Five members of a family sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out apparently from a gas line leak at Aukoba Bazar in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Friday night.

The injured- Hasun Banu, 55, her husband Oli Ahmed, 65, son Omar Faruk, 18, daughter Sahara Begum, 24, and brother Sonauddin, 45, are now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

Hasun is a housewife while her husband and brother run a dry fish shop in Gausia market. Their daughter is physically challenged and their son is a garment worker.

Nure Alam, nephew of Hasun, said his aunt set up a device to increase flow of gas at the house around two weeks back due to the low pressure of gas.

The fire broke out after a blast when they were asleep in the house around 11pm, he said.

Hearing this, neighbours rushed to the spot and took the injured to US-Bangla Hospital in Rupganj and later shifted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Hasun suffered 46 per cent burn, Oli 58 per cent, Sahara 30 per cent, Omar 15 per cent and Sonauddin 90 per cent and their condition was stated to be critical, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost's in-charge Md Bacchu Miah quoting physicians.

Officer-in-charge of Rupganj police station ASM Sayed said that members of Fire Service and Civil Defence inspected the spot.
