A mobile court gave imprisonment in different terms to five unscrupulous traders for selling prohibited fish including piranha at Karwan Bazar in the capital.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) mobile court Executive Magistrate Md Sarwar Alam conducted the drive in Karwan Bazar area on Friday.
RAB claimed that prohibited piranha was selling in the name of rupchanda fish. Besides, these fishmongers were also found to have treated fish with colour and harmful chemicals for more money from buyers.
Earlier on April 6, 2020, the cabinet approved the draft of the Fish and Fish Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Bill, 2020, toughening the punishment for marketing and exporting fish or fish products treated with harmful chemicals.
As per the draft bill, the punishment for violation of the law is a minimum of five years’ imprisonment, 5 lakh taka in fine or both.
According to the existing Fish and Fish Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Ordinance, 1983, the punishment is a maximum of six months’ imprisonment, 5,000 taka in fine or both.
