Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will engage 550 of their city buses on long routes to carry extra passengers home during the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation.

The long-haul buses, which are in service to the districts, will continue making their trip as usual, said BRTC Chairman Md Tazul Islam on Monday.

Addressing a press briefing at the BRTC office in Dhaka, he said, "We held a meeting last week on our preparation on the occasion of Eid. We have 600 buses in our fleet to provide service in Dhaka city. We decided at the meeting that 50 buses will operate in the city and 550 buses will provide services on the long routes during Eid.”

“Apart from this, all long-distance buses will run regularly. This decision has been taken as the Eid holiday is likely to be longer than usual this time,” he said.

“We will announce the schedule and details of the service in a few days in the form of a public notice in the newspapers,” Tazul added.

He also said that only 34 vehicles in the BRTC fleet are running on lease. “We will no longer lease out buses. This number will be brought down to zero.”

According to the corporation, 97 buses owned by BRTC are now out of service. They have 1,253 buses in service across the country.
