69pc internet users face sexual harassment, finds study

Sixty-nine per cent internet users are sexually harassed by their relatives after they shared their private videos and photos on internet, reveals a study conducted by Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation.

Among such instances of harassment, 33.77 per cent are related to love affair. In 35.71 cases, the offenders were known to the victims.

This research was published at a webinar arranged by the Dhaka University chapter of Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation. Analysing reports of 154 incidents reported on national and regional dailies between January and December 2020, the report was prepared.

The research also reveals that 92.20 per cent victims are female and among them young adults aged between 18 and 30 are the most sufferer. Besides 32.47 per cent of the victims are aged below 18 years.

Males aged above 30 years are fall victim of such harassment, the report said.

Most of the cases are reported in Dhaka division which stands at 33.12 per cent followed by Chattogram at 16.88 per cent.

Victims are intimidated of publishing personal videos and photos on the internet.

The study recommended to prevent the abuse of technology developing a policy regarding the use of internet use by children and the females.

It also recommended creating mass awareness, ensuring safe working environment in the institutions, ensuring religious education and consciousness, increasing the working force in law enforcement agencies, reducing unemployment.
