7 KCC mayoral candidates submit nomination papers

Seven candidates have submitted their nomination papers to contest for the mayor's post in the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election - to be held on June 12.

Tuesday was the last day for filing nomination papers for Khulna City Corporation elections.

According to information provided by the district election office, 236 candidates collected nomination papers for the posts of mayor, general councillor and reserved councillor in the Khulna City Corporation election.

Of the total candidates, 195 have submitted nomination papers till the last day on Tuesday.

Those who submitted nomination papers for the mayoral elections are incumbent Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque from Awami League, Md Shafiqul Islam Madhu from Jatiya Party, and Jaker Party's SM Sabbir Hossain.

The district election office also received nomination papers from Md Abdullah Chowdhury from Aguan-71, Maulana Abdul Awal of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and independent candidates SM Mushfiqur Rahman and Engineer Syed Kamrul Islam.

Besides, 149 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the post of general councillor in 31 wards of the city. And 39 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the reserved councillor post.

Returning Officer of KCC Elections, Alauddin said the collection and submission of nomination papers has been completed in a fair and peaceful environment.

"Candidates have been advised to follow the electoral code of conduct. Five people, including the candidate, have been asked to come at the time of filing nomination papers," he said. "Each has submitted their nomination papers accordingly," he added.

"They have been asked to remove promotional material. We want to conduct the elections in a fair and peaceful manner. This requires everyone's cooperation," he also said.

The electoral symbols among the candidates will be distributed on May 26 after scrutinising the submitted nomination papers on May 18. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 25.

A total of 535, 528 (5.35 lakh) voters under 31 wards will be eligible to cast their votes on June 12 from 8am to 4pm.
