A bunch of fallen stars in 12th nat’l polls

A number of heavyweight candidates failed to secure victory in the 12th parliamentary polls.

Among them are Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju in Pirojpur-2, Bangabir Kader Siddique in Tangail-8, and Yusuf Abdullah Harun in Cumilla-3 constituencies.

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju lost the Pirojpur-2 election against independent candidate Mohiuddin Maharaj.

In Tangail-8 constituency, Awami League-endorsed candidate Anupam Shahjahan Roy has unofficially been elected independently with 96,401 votes. His nearest rival, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Bangabir Kader Siddique secured only 67,501 votes.

In the Rajshahi-2 (Sadar) constituency, Fazle Hossain Badsha, the general secretary of the Bangladesh Workers party, has been defeated.

Independently, Shafiqur Rahman, the vice president of Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League, has emerged victorious unofficially with 34,906 votes. Fazle Hossain Badsha secured 31,466 votes.

In Cumilla 3 constituency, Jahangir Alam Sarkar, former general secretary of Cumilla North District Awami League, ran as an independent candidate and secured the election symbol of “Eagle.”

Jahangir won the polls unofficially with 55,884 votes, while incumbent lawmaker Yusuf Abdullah Harun of Bangladesh Awami League received 35,778 votes.

Habiganj-4 (Madhabpur-Chunarughat) independent candidate Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon secured 1.98 lakh votes, while two-time Awami League lawmaker Mahbub Ali received only 47,000 votes, as per the locally announced election results.

In the 12th National Parliament Election, Hasanul Haq Inu, the candidate nominated by the Grand Alliance from Kushtia-2 constituency, was unable to secure victory.

Contesting with the symbol of “Boat,” but the winner in that constituency is independent candidate Md Qamarul Arefin, who contested with the symbol of “Truck.”

In the Manikganj-2 constituency, popular singer Momtaz Begum was defeated.
