Prof Dr Abul Barkat and Prof Dr Aynul Islam have been elected unopposed the president and general secretary of Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) respectively for the next two years (2022-2023).

Out of 29 posts of BEA executive committee, Barkat and Aynul-led panel won 28 posts, said a press release issued on Sunday.

The election was held in the BEA biennial conference concluded on Saturday at the auditorium of Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Ramna.

Some 5,000 economists from throughout the country participated in the conference.

Among other elected, five vice presidents Prof Hannana Begum, Dr Md Alamgir Hossain Bhuiyan, Prof Md Moazzem Hossain Khan, Md Mostafizur Rahman Sardar and Dr Md Saidur Rahman, Treasurer AZM Saleh, two joint secretaries Badrul Munir and Sheikh Ali Ahmed Tutul, five assistant secretaries Partho Sarathi Ghosh, Monsur MY Chowdhury, Md Jahangir Alam, Syed Asrarul Haque Shopen and Hasibul Islam.

The 14 elected members are Dr Md Liakat Hossain Moral, Dr Jamaluddin Ahmed, Prof Jahirul Islam Sikder, Dr Md Sadequnnabi Chowdhury, Prof Shahanara Begum Dr Md Morshed Hossain, Prof Md Shamimul Islam, Md Mozammel Haque, Shaed Ahmed, Meherunnesa, Khorshedul Alam Kaderi, Nesar Ahmed, Mohammad Akbar Kabir and Md Akhteruzzaman Khan.

Dr Barkat is also the current president of the association, while Dr Jamaluddin Ahmed is its outgoing general secretary.
