Abul Momen wins Shah Alamgir Journalism Excellence Award

Renowned journalist, winner of the Ekushey Padak award in Journalism, and Dainik Amader Shomoy Editor Abul Momen has won the Shah Alamgir Journalism Excellence Award.

Abul Momen, an eminent Journalist, poet, and educationist, has been serving as the editor of Dainik Amader Shomoy since July last year while he had served the same newspaper as the advisory editor since 2013.

He had also been a resident editor of Prothom Alo for a span of 15 years since 1998. Esteemed litterateur Abul Fazal’s son Abul Momen completed his master's in English from Dhaka University in 1973.

After independence, he started working in journalism. He worked for Daily Life and Dainik Purbokone, which is one the leading newspapers published in Chattogram, as assistant editor.

Besides, he was the resident editor of Bhorer Kagoj and the advisory editor of Dainik Suprabhat. After establishing the department of Communication and Journalism in University of Chittagong, he was also involved in teaching there.

Abul Momen has been writing in newspapers on various contemporary issues since independence. He has been working with education for more than four decades, while the number of essays is more than fifty.

He received the Ekushey Padak 2017 in recognition of his outstanding contribution in Journalism.

Momen also won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2016 in the non-fiction category, and he received several prestigious awards for his outstanding contribution in respected fields.

Meanwhile, the Shah Alamgir Journalism Excellence Award is conferred upon journalists of the new generation to follow the life and works of late journalist Shah Alamgir, who served as director general of Press Institute Bangladesh. The award was introduced in 2023.

Shah Alamgir passed away at the age of 62 in 2019. He had worked at Channel I as chief news editor, Ekushey Television as head of news, Jamuna Television as director (news), and Maasranga Television as the head of the news.

Alamgir also served as president and general secretary of the Dhaka Union of Journalists.
