Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday interrogated Sharmin Chowdhury, wife of expelled Dhaka South Jubo League president Ismail Hossen Chowdhury Samrat, and his brother in law Farid Ahmed Chowdhury, as part of an investigation into Samrat’s illegal wealth.
A three-member team led by ACC deputy director Md. Jahangir Alam grilled them at the ACC headquarters in Dhaka.
ACC secretary Md Dilwar Bhakt told The Business Post, "ACC interrogated them to dig out Samrat’s illegal wealth as they are family members. We are also looking into those who helped him in acquiring illegal wealth".
Earlier on Tuesday, ACC grilled Samrat at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for his involvement in acquiring wealth by corruption and extortion.
ACC filed a case in November last year for possessing 2.94 taka crore worth property by illegal means and ACC interrogated him in this affairs.
Law enforcement agencies arrested Samrat and others who were running casino business in Dhaka and elsewhere of the country.
The national anti-graft body started a probe into casino kingpins on September 30 in the wake of a raid by law enforcement agencies against casino and gambling.
ACC so far filed 21 cases against handful persons including Samrat, JK Shamim, sacked Jubo league leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, AL leader Anamul Haque Anu his brother Rupom Bhuiyan, online casino kingpin Selim Prodhan, BCB director Lukman Hossen Bhuiyan, president of Kalabagan Keira Chakra Shafiqul Alam Firoze, ward councillor Habibur Rahman Mizan, Tarequezzaman Rajib, associates of Samrat Anamul Haque Arman, Zakir Hossen, councilor Mominul Haque Sayed and many more who are believed to have acquired illegal wealth by casino and other means of business.
A team led by ACC director Syed Iqbal is investigating the affairs of casino business and other fraudulent activity done by different persons including contractors and politicians.
