The Anti-Corruption Commission has imposed a travel ban on e-commerce platform Evaly's managing director Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, barring them from leaving the country.

A letter was sent to the immigration department on Friday in this connection.

The ACC launched an inquiry against Evaly after a commerce ministry's request for legal action over alleged embezzlement of Tk 338 crore which Evaly took in advance from the customers and owed to the merchants.

The commission on Thursday formed a two-member probe panel after receiving Bangladesh Bank report, which says Evaly accepted Tk 214 crore in advance payment from the customers and the merchants owed Tk 190 crore. So, Evaly should have Tk 404 crore but this non-investing e-commerce company has only Tk 65.18 crore assets instead.

According to ACC sources, following Evaly’s alleged embezzlement of money worth Tk338 crore, Bangladesh Bank has expressed its concern over the amount of Evaly's liability to customers and merchants which may be even higher as the Evaly authorities did not allow the inspection team to enter the company's replica database.

ACC assistant director Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury and deputy assistant director Shihab Salam are investigating the Evaly scam.

Evaly offers consumers all sorts of lucrative deals, with 'cash back' offers going up to 100 to 150 per cent. If you buy, for example, Tk100 worth of goods, you can get the same amount back or even more.

Thousands of consumers are being lured in by these almost unbelievable deals being offered by this Bangladeshi e-commerce company. A few are even making a profit, but most are still waiting to see the big bucks.

Online shopping saves time and cuts down on risks. Evaly registered as a home delivery company for all sorts of products. It sells motorcycles, refrigerators, cell phones, televisions and much more. Recently it has started selling cars too.
