ACC sues customs commissioner over illegal assets

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against the current commissioner of the Commissionerate of Customs Valuation and Internal Audit Mohammad Enamul Hoque, for allegedly acquiring illegal wealth of around Tk10 crore.

ACC's Assistant Director Mahbubul Alam in Dhaka filed the case as the plaintiff where the customs high official has been accused of amassing Tk9,76,97,107 which is inconsistent with his income and outside the known source of income.

The ACC initiated an investigation against him in November 2022, and he underwent questioning during the same month. Enamul has been serving as the customs commissioner at Customs Valuation and Internal Audit Commissionerate since November 2020.

According to the case statement, the accused bought lands, flats and commercial spaces at 64 places at Tk21,52,53,012 from 1993 to 2022. He also invested in share Market, fish farm, gold ornaments and other means along with savings worth Tk58,32,319.

Enamul, the accused, possesses immovable assets valued at Tk21,52,53,012 and movable assets worth Tk58,32,319, resulting in a total net worth of Tk22,10,85,331.

Up until the same point, he declared a debt of Tk5,78,75,438, but he couldn't substantiate taking a loan of Tk1,44,22,040 with documentary evidence. Consequently, his verified debt amount is Tk4,34,53,398. After deducting the debt, his net worth amounts to Tk17,76,31,933.

According to his income tax return file, the official has shown source of income of Tk79934826 but he could not show legitimate source of income against remaining assets of Tk9,76,97,107 which is disproportionate to his income and there is good reason to believe that it is an asset outside known sources of income, the ACC said in the case statement.
