The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is taking help from Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) to bring back Prashanta Kumar Halder, alias PK Halder
PK Halder, now a fugitive in Canada, is accused of embezzling Taka 3,600 crore from various financial institutions.
ACC has almost completed the paper work needed to seek Interpol’s assistance in tracking PK Halder down and bring him back to Bangladesh.
Taking with The Business Post on Thursday, Director Public Relations of ACC Pranab Kumar Bhattachariya said, “Although promising to return to the country, PK Halder has been dodging the court and ACC. ACC will soon send a letter to Interpol in this regard.”
PK Halder was the managing director of NRB Global Bank and International Leasing and Finance Service Ltd which is enlisted in the stock market.
Amid the allegations of International Leasing and Financial Services Limited (ILFSL) clients about grabbing their money, ACC filed case against PK Halder over the allegations of possessing Taka 300 crore illegal wealth.
In a dramatic development, ILFSL on September 7, told the court that PK Halder wanted to return home in court protection to pay back the embezzled money.
On the other hand, the High Court on Thursday wanted to know what steps have been taken to arrest PK Halder, who fled the country after allegedly siphoning out around Taka 10,200 crore from different non-banking financial institutions. The court ordered the report be submitted in 10 days.
Earlier, PK Halder promised to return to Dhaka on October 25 but he never did as court ordered his arrest as soon as he lands in the country.
The court also ordered the police chief, immigration department and ACC to take measures to ensure his safe return and to surrender to the court.
Kurshid Alam, who is prosecuting PK Halder on behalf of ACC said, “PK Halder didn't turn up the country despite his assurance of returning to the country. PK Halder played with the court and ACC is now trying hard to bring PK Halder back to the country through Interpol.”
