Achieving SDG requires safe return of Rohingyas: GED report

To achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and ensure peace and stability in Bangladesh and in the region will depend on the safe return of Rohingya people who took refuge in Bangladesh amid the brutal crackdown of Myanmar military in Rakhine State, said a report of General Economic Division (GED), a branch of Bangladesh Planning Commission.

The report titled "Sustainable development goal: Bangladesh achievement report -2020" also said, If Rohingya return is ensured it will lessen burden on the asset and it is essential to press Myanmar hard on the issue.

GED prepared the report in June this year and made public recently.

Commenting on the report Dr Shamsul Alam member of GED said, “Progress in reducing violence, expanding rule of law, empowering institutions and justice to human being yet to be established. Still, millions of people around the world are deprived of rights of security and basic human rights. Sexual violence and discrimination on the basis of gender is rampant which slowing down the pace of development and to achieve SDG-16, new initiatives should be taken".

The report further said, in improvised families, women are being harassed physically and mentally in large extent and massive campaign and effort couple with the participation of local elected representatives is required to curb these issues.

To curb human trafficking, international alliance should be expanded, the report said adding that Bangladesh is doing well in many indicators in SDG-16 as the country managed to reduce death rate in violence and health-related issue.

Government is trying hard to ensure free flow of information and freedom of speech, the report claimed.

In a report published by GED in 2018 on the issue of finance strategy said, in 2019-2020 fiscal year $1.08 billion, in 2024-25 fiscal year $1.78 billion and in 2029-30 fiscal year $2.33 billion additional investment will be required to achieve SDG-16.

Of these, 80 percent will be invested by the government and rest of the 20 percent will come from external sources.

In the year 2020, additional $0.40 billion is earmarked for public safety and security which is 36.6 percent of the total budget of SDG-16 finance strategy.

To fulfil finance deficit, it is advised to consult with international doners and development partners, the report said.
