After chilli, now potato price soars

The prices of potato have soared to a record-high of Tk50-55 per kg after the volatility in the green chilli’s market has come down this week.

Besides, the price of coarse rice, many other vegetables including okra, eggplant, gourd and some spices including garlic increased farther this week, say kitchen market sources.

The price of most vegetables has exceeded Tk80 per kg, marking a significant increase from Tk70 per kg just one week ago.

Despite refiners having set the new prices for edible oil, the oil at the new rate has not yet arrived even after two days, and the previous high-priced oil continues to be sold.

According to the sellers, they obtain information about the new price of edible oil through media, but suppliers from any brand company have not provided any assurance regarding this matter.

However, there has been a decline in the prices of certain essentials, such as local onions, farm chicken, eggs, and green chili, this week.

The price of others essential including flour, lentil and sugar remained unchanged previous high.

Visiting to several kitchen markets in the capital, including Muhammadpur Krishi Market, Segunbagicha Market, and Maniknagar Kitchen Market, this correspondent found the price of coarse variety rice has increased by Tk1 per kg.

On Thursday, Paizem, BR28, and Pariza rice were being sold at Tk55-57 per kg, compared to Tk55-56 per kg last week. Additionally, Zirashail rice was priced between Tk68-74 per kg.

Due to prices dropped in global marke, Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association fixed the new rates on Tuesday following discussions with commerce ministry and the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission.

The price of bottled soybean oil has been reduced by Tk10 per litre to Tk179. Besides, the price of loose soybean oil has dropped by Tk8 to Tk159 per litre.

Despite the implementation of the new prices starting from Wednesday, the retail market is yet to receive the oil at the updated rates.

Currently, a bottle of soybean oil is being sold at Tk189 per litre, while a 5-litre bottle is priced at Tk920. Loose soybean oil continues to be sold at Tk170-175 per litre, similar to the prices observed in the previous week.

Speaking to The Business Post, Mustafizur Rahman, a retailer at Segunbagicha kitchen markert said, “Various newspapers have reported a reduction of Tk10 per litre in the price of edible oil. However, despite these reports, the new price of oil has not made its way to the market.  Additionally, representatives from different brands companies have not provided any information regarding the expected arrival of the new price.”

He added, “Typically, price hikes are swiftly implemented, while price reductions are implemented at a much slower pace.”

The price of green chillies has further decreased and is currently being retailed at Tk 250-280 per kg, compared to the previous week when it was above Tk300 per kg.

Meanwhile, the price of potatoes has increased by Tk10 per kg within a week, with the retail price on Thursday (yesterday) ranging between Tk50-55 per kg.

Farid Uddin, a vegetable retailer from Maniknagar kitchen market area, said that he offers a wide variety of vegetables, approximately 12 to 15 types, which are highly sought after by customers.

Among these, the majority of vegetables such as radish, eggplant, bitter gourd, tomato, and green chilli are priced above Tk80 per kg. The remaining vegetables are priced between Tk60-70 per kg.
