AMA Muhith laid to rest in Sylhet

Former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, who breathed his last at a hospital in Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday, was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard in the Roynagar area of Sylhet city on Sunday afternoon.

He was buried next to his parents at around 3:45pm after his namaz-e-janaza.

Prior to the burial, a namaz-e-janaza was held at the Alia Madrasa ground at 2:18pm.

His body was earlier taken to Central Shaheed Minar in the Chauhatta area for paying homage from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm.

The mortal remains of AMA Muhith was taken to his residence in Sylhet city from Dhaka on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Sylhet district and city units of Awami League decided to observe a two-day mourning following the demise of AMA Muhith.

Muhith, an economist, diplomat, freedom fighter and language veteran, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held around 10:45am at Gulshan Azad Mosque in the city.

Later, his body was taken to Central Shaheed Minar at 12 noon so that people from all walks of life can pay homage.

On behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid, his Military Secretary Maj Gen SM Salahuddin Islam and on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her Military Secretary Brig Gen Kabir Ahmed paid tributes to Muhith by placing wreaths at his coffin.

On behalf of parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Sergeant at Arms Commodore M Nayeem Rahman laid a wreath at Muhith's coffin.

AMA Muhith's brother Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen along with other family members was present on the occasion.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Hasan Mahmud, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President and Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Hasanul Haq Inu also paid their last tributes to Muhith.

Different political, social and cultural organisations and professional bodies and individuals also paid tributes to the former finance minister.

The second namaz-e-janaza was held at Dhaka University central mosque after Zuhr prayers.
