Another person who sustained injuries during a series of clashes between Dhaka College students and traders in the capital’s New Market area on Tuesday, died early Thursday at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

“Md Mursalin, 26, an employee of a shop, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit in the early hours of today,” confirmed Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.

The clashes that began around Monday midnight and continued sporadically throughout Tuesday left at least 50 people injured and two dead so far.

Zahidur Rahman, cousin of Mursalin, said the physicians informed the family that the condition of Mursalin was deteriorating around 2:30am. “Later, they declared him dead at 4:36am.”

A father of two daughters, Mursalin lived with his family at Kamrangirchar in the capital.

Meanwhile, traders are opening their shops in the New Market and adjacent areas following a meeting on Wednesday night among teachers, students of Dhaka College, association of the business owners, and officials of home and education ministries.

On Wednesday afternoon, fresh tension gripped the New Market area after several crude bomb explosions rocked the Dhaka College campus.

Though some businesses reopened after being shut for more than a day, traders quickly closed shutters after the blasts.
