A stone-laden lighter vessel sank near Mongla port in the early hours of Saturday.

Cracks developed at the bottom of MV Beauty Lohagara-2 after it hit a hidden shoal and then it started to sink, said Mongla port harbour master commander Sheikh Fakhar Uddin.

The Coast Guard members immediately rescued 10 crew from the vessel.

The port authorities said the vessel was heading towards Khulna after loading 100 tonnes of stones from another vessel.

On Friday noon, another cargo vessel carrying fertiliser named MV Desh Bondhu sank in the Pashur River near Mongla port.

Ten crew of the cargo vessel managed to swim ashore.

The ship was heading towards Jashore after loading 850 tonnes of Diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser from a foreign ship anchored at Pashur channel.
