Ansar members attacked and injured six Army personnel in the city’s Secretariat area on Sunday.

One of the injured Army personnel is reported to be in critical condition, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release issued on Monday.

The release further stated that approximately 10,000 Ansar members assembled at different intervals to encircle the Bangladesh Secretariat, taking seven advisers from the interim government and several high-ranking officials hostage.

Later, the director general of Ansar and VDP arrived at the Secretariat in the afternoon to pacify the agitated Ansar members, and accepted all the demands.

However, the Ansar members did not leave the Secretariat area, and detained the director general. And some Ansar members tried to break Gate Number 3 of the Secretariat and enter the premises.

During that time, the agitated Ansar members attacked the students and an ARMY patrol team who was guarding the secretariat. The Ansar personnel were beaten and bricks were thrown at them.

Amid the violence, six soldiers were injured and one of them is in serious condition, the press statement read.

In this situation, more troops were deployed to bring the situation under control. Despite repeated patient engagements with the Ansar members, they did not hear any requests. The army fired 27 blank rounds in the air when the agitated Ansars were not deterred.

Later, the Army deployed additional troops in the Secretariat area, dispersed the Ansars, and brought the situation under control.

The release stated that the seven advisers of the interim government, the Director General of Ansar, senior officials of the law enforcement agencies, and all Secretariat officials were later safely evacuated from the Secretariat area with the help of the Army.

The deployed army personnel took into custody some of the Ansar members who had infiltrated the Secretariat and later sought refuge and handed them over to the police, the ISPR release read.
