Anti-Modi protesters clash with cops in Baitul Mukarram area

A clash between police and protesters broke out as the latter tried to bring out a procession after Jum’a prayers in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque area on Friday, protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Right after the Jum’a prayers, many devotees started chanting slogans near the north gate of the mosque against Modi’s arrival, prompting the police to fire rubber bullets and charged batons on them.

Jubo League and Chhatra League activists were also seen around the mosque during the clash. Two motorcycles were also burnt in front of the North gate of the national mosque.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on a two-day official visit to join the twin celebrations of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence.

It is Modi's first visit outside India since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic across the world.
